Republicans have held a majority on the Orange County Board of Supervisors since 1976. The time is now to strengthen term limits and impose a lifetime ban on career politicians.
Why Term Limits Are Important |
- Stops career Republican politicians by kicking them out of office.
- Allows residents from the community to bring a fresh perspective to public service.
- County supervisors are responsible for $7 billion in public funds and must be held accountable.
- Democrats have an opportunity to tackle serious issues like homelessness, police reform, racial equity, and affordable housing.
- The Republican majority has compeltely mishandled the response to the Coronavirus.
- County supervisors will draw new election districts and Republicans want to rig the lines to their advantage.
THE PETITION
"As an Orange County resident, I support strengthening county term limits and imposing a lifetime ban on career politicians (Item S71K). Stronger term limits will give other residents an opportunity to run for office, bring a fresh perspective to county leadership, and ensure greater accountability in government. It is unfair that previous elected officials have held their positions for up to 29 years and have exploited a loophole to stay in public office. Please let voters have the opportunity to vote for stronger term limits at the next election."

Stop Career Politicians with Strict Term Limits |
Career Politicians |
Problem: In Orange County’s history, 18 (or 20%) members of the County Board of Supervisors have served more than 12 years. The longest served 29 years! |

Strict Term Limits |
Solution: Similar to Prop 28, a politician can be permanently barred after serving three terms. Prop 28 imposed strict term limits on state legislators, which passed with 61% of the vote. Nine Orange County cities have already passed term limits on local politicians. Democratic leaders pushed Aliso Viejo to consider term limits at the next election. |

A Lifetime Ban to Close Loophole |
Impose Lifetime Ban |
Solution: The County's non-partisan top attorney recommended that voters can close the loophole on career politicians by imposing a lifetime ban using a ballot initiative. The catch is that a Republican majority of county supervisors must approve an election. |

Republican Operatives Undermine Voters & Open Elections
Republican operatives have blocked several attempts to allow voters to consider stronger term limits. Supervisor Donald Wagner (R-North Tustin) stated, "I oppose term limits. They are undemocratic, and every term has a limit which the public can exercise by voting against the incumbent." He failed to mention that incumbents are Republicans who have failed to address major leadership issues like homelessness. Wagner is supported by conservative operatives like Jon Fleischman who was a former henchman to Orange County Sheriff Mike Carona who was convicted of corruption. Wagner and Fleischman will lie, steal, and cheat to ensure the Board of Supervisors remains in Republican hands like it has for the past 45 years. |
